How to Conduct Yourself at a Volunteer Site

Now that you're ready to go, you've got directions to the site; you've got a ride, or can walk:

The following guidelines are important to remember:

  • Dress appropriately to where you are going. For example, outdoor vs. indoor require different shoes. If you're sorting food, don't wear your favorite outfit, as this job may get messy.
  • Be on time
  • Go in ready to work, with a positive attitude
  • If someone asks you to do something and you don't understand, ask questions
    • Don't hold back or hesitate to ask questions
  • Don't abuse the tools provided by the organization. If you're working on a computer, use it for work only. It will be monumentally embarrasing if a supervisor catches you writing an email to your boyfriend/girlfriend.
  • Know that when you're on the job, you're expected to be fully present all the time. If a friend stops by, say hello, but then return to your work. Fraternizing during volunteer hours=not cool
  • You're representing all of us here from SOS, so make us proud!
If you can't make it at the appointed time, be sure to call as soon as possible to let the organization know.

Remember, a volunteer position is a job and a commitment. Others are counting on you to be there and be ready to do a good job.

Once your commitment to the volunteer organization is completed it is important to do 2 things:

  • 1. Ask the organization for a letter saying that you did volunteer there, how often and in what capacity.
  • 2. Fill out the volunteer experience evaluation form that the organization gives you. (form can also be found here(link to online form))
