How To Contact A Service Organization
1) Once you find an organization that you think might meet your needs, read the given information about them and call their recommended contact person. This will allow you to be prepared for the phone call to the volunteer organization.
2) You should personally make the first phone call to the volunteer organization. Do not have your parents or friend make this call. Calling yourself shows that you are truly interested.
3) When you call, say your name and the reason you're calling. Let the organization know that you're interested in volunteering for them. Sometimes a phone call is all that is needed in order to participate in their volunteer program. These organizations may describe their program to you and want to know when you are available to do volunteer work. However, some organizations may want to meet you before you start working with them.
4) If the organization does not suggest that you come in for an interview, ask them if they would like to schedule an interview. Ask them if they would like you to bring a resume. (Click here for a sample resume). A resume is a list of previous and current activities, references, contact information, educational status.
5) You will want to come away from the phone conversation knowing:
- When you can volunteer or when you can meet with them
- What the requirements are for volunteering (clothing, shoes, etc.)
- Any prior experience that may be needed
- What time you should be there
- Where the volunteer site is (you may need directions)
- How long they want you to volunteer for (the afternoon, 10 weeks, a whole summer)
