How to prepare for and conduct yourself at an interview

1) In advance, think about what you want them to know about yourself, such as your age, your interests, any other previous experience in volunteer work, any talents or skills you have to offer, as well as personal qualities such as honesty, kindness, compassion, responsibility or patience. When formalized, this is called a resume.

2) Expect to answer questions about yourself and your experience. Also, be prepared to ask questions about the volunteer service and ask any unanswered questions you may still have. Don't be hesitant to ask questions if you don't understand something or don't feel comfortable about something. Don't commit to hours or responsibilities if you are not sure of your availability. Although the volunteer group you are looking into may be a great opportunity, make sure the service opportunity is right for you!

3) Make sure that you schedule your interview for a time that works for you. Also, when you go to the interview, make sure you are on time!

4) General tips on what to wear: No ripped jeans; Cover your shoulders and stomach; Wear a collared or plain, non-offensive shirt; Make sure you have good hygiene. Know the organization you are volunteering for and plan your outfit accordingly (ex. If you are interviewing for Catholic Charities, dress more conservatively; if you are interviewing for Habitat for Humanity, think more outdoorsy and casual).

5) General tips on how to act: Do not hesitate to shake hands; Make eye contact; Try to use as little slang as possible; Try to relax and be yourself! This is important, as volunteer organizations want to know the real you. Do not chew gum. Be confident in your interview, but don't present yourself as cocky. Remember to describe your strengths and goals. This interview is meant to establish whether or not this service opportunity is good for you.

Good luck and have fun with your interview!
